Lawsuits alleging police misconduct are a highly specialized area of the law demanding experienced and competent counsel. These cases typically involve complex issues of constitutional law, criminal procedure, tort law, and the continuously-evolving body of law surrounding 42 U.S.C. § 1983.

Police civil liability cases require particularized knowledge and expertise asserting immunities and other defenses that are unique to police officers and their government employer. As a former police officer, attorney Garry Kregelka has a wealth of experience and knowledge in this particular area, and he is prepared to aggressively defend or prosecute claims of:

        excessive force

        false arrest

        assault and battery

        malicious prosecution

        unlawful detention

        unlawful search

        denial of medical care

        other alleged civil rights violations

Attorney Garry Kregelka spent over 25 years with the Michigan State Police, working his way up through the ranks as a trooper, undercover officer, detective sergeant, and Commander of the Gladstone and Ypsilanti Posts. He also served as Chief of Police in Beloit, Wisconsin for two years and he has been a licensed private investigator since 1999. Garry also spent a year working as the Meridian Township Prosecutor and he is an adjunct professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School..

Garry received a Bachelor's degree in 1990 and a Master's degree in 1993 from Eastern Michigan University. He is a graduate of the Michigan State Police Academy and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. He received his law degree from Thomas Cooley Law School in 2002, graduating first in his class, summa cum laude, after winning numerous academic awards, and was admitted to practice law in Michigan that same year. Garry has also been admitted to practice by the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan and by the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

As a former police officer, Garry believes that most police officers try their best to do what is right under very difficult circumstances. And, he is aware that people often wrongly accuse police offers of violating the law for revenge, to try to get out of a charge, or for monetary gain. He is also aware that officers are human and sometimes they just make a mistake. In those instances, he will do everything he can to defend the officer, and he actively seeks police officers as clients. However, he also understands that there are some officers who intentionally violate the law and individual rights. For those few, he has no sympathy or regard. As a post commander and chief of police he did not tolerate such behavior, and he has a strong record of administering discipline, up to and including discharge and criminal prosecution, in situations that warranted such consequences.

Now, as a trial attorney, Mr. Kregelka has no qualms about bringing an officer to justice or holding the officer accountable for his or her wrongful acts. And, if justice requires it, he will aggressively pursue both criminal sanctions and civil remedies on behalf of someone who has been mistreated or falsely accused by the police.

Garry makes this promise to all of his clients: He will do everything legally and ethically possible to aggressively represent you if he accepts you as a client.  He will use all of his knowledge, experience, talents, and passion for justice on your behalf. He will use every available resource and is not afraid to ask for help if he needs it. Moreover, if he cannot provide you with the best representation possible he will find someone who can.
